About the Book

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit who lives lavishly with Abilene Tulane, who “thought almost as highly of Edward as Edward thought of himself.” Edward expects nothing but the finest for himself, and although Abilene cleans him and dresses him in dapper clothing, he does not love her. And then one day, he is lost. Thus begins Edward's journey. First he’s caught in a fisherman’s net, and taken to the first of many new homes, where the fisherman’s wife calls him Susanna and dresses him like a girl. In his new home, however, his heart begins to stir. Later Edward is thrown into a dump and adopted by a hobo named Bull, who calls Edward Malone. Edward's resistence to love really begins to crumble at the bedside of an ailing child, but all too soon he is whisked away to the bustling streets of Memphis. As the fragile rabbit is tossed from one owner to the next, he humbly comes to learn what it is like to not only lose someone, but to love someone.

Read the Reviews

"When Edward's Journey ends, the reader will be wishing this story could go on and on." -Washington Post

"This achingly beautiful story shows a true master of writing at her very best. This superb book is beautifully written in spare yet stirring language. The tender look at the changes from arrogance to grateful loving is perfectly delineated." -School Library Journal, starred review

"As she did in her Newbery Medal Book, The Tale of Despereaux (2004), DiCamillo tucks important messages into this story and once more plumbs the mystery of the heart—or, in this case, the heartless. The story soars because of DiCamillo's lyrical use of language and her understanding of universal yearnings. This will be a pleasure to read aloud." -Booklist, starred review

"But a story for today about a toy rabbit? Why should I care what happens to an arrogant, over-dressed china rabbit? But I did care, desperately, and I think I can safely predict you will, too.” -Katherine Paterson, in Publishers Weekly
